Since 2000, Associate Professor Yvonne Parry has established herself as a leading international researcher in health equity and service access for marginalised and vulnerable children. Her foundational research has directly informed national and international policy and improved access to health, developmental and community services for children living in complex social and health environments.
A mixed methods expert, Dr Parry evaluates the effectiveness and responsiveness of primary health and community services, particularly for underserved mobile and at-risk populations. Her collaborative research foregrounds the voices of parents and children in shaping child- and family-centred services and interventions.
At the Caring Futures Institute, Flinders University, Dr Parry is recognised as a global authority in health service design and evaluation within limited resource and high-needs contexts. Her work bridges international programs and frameworks, enabling knowledge exchange and adaptation of early childhood and parenting programs tailored for marginalised communities.
She has led multiple interdisciplinary national evaluation projects that have influenced how services for at-risk children are delivered and scaled. Her innovative measurement tools and co-designed methodologies have improved long-term outcomes for children and families, particularly through partnerships with initiatives like Communities for Children (CfC) and the homelessness sector.
Her expertise spans:
Early Childhood Development (ECD) and its interaction with social determinants of health,
Research translation into professional practice,
Sustainable models of care for vulnerable children aged 0–12 years,
Homelessness, particularly for children and families, with strong sectoral partnerships.
Impact and Recognition
Dr Parry's contributions have been nationally recognised with the NAPCAN Play Your Part Award, celebrating her leadership in evidence-informed practice and sustainable, child-aware service delivery. Her work has influenced high-level policy and inquiry reports, including:
The Welsh Parliament,
The UK All-Party Parliamentary Group for Ending Homelessness, and
The United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
She has also published with global research collaborators, including the Inclusion Health team at University College London, with research appearing in BMJ Archives of Disease in Childhood.
Education and Academic Leadership
A passionate educator, Dr Parry integrates her research into interdisciplinary undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. As Undergraduate Student Experience Coordinator (Nursing), she drives student engagement and success strategies, providing tailored academic and pastoral support. Her educational philosophy embeds real-world research, policy, and practice into learning.
She promotes child-aware practice in curriculum, supervising research students across disciplines, and fostering interprofessional collaboration to drive health equity.
Professional Leadership and Affiliations
Dr Parry is a member of several key professional bodies including:
ARACY (Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth),
ACCYPN (Australian College of Children and Young People’s Nurses),
ICCHNR (International Collaboration for Community Health Nursing Research),
APNA (Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association).
She is:
Inaugural Editor of the ACCYPN Journal,
Chair of the ACCYPN,
An established leader in national and international health research focused on vulnerable populations.
